New Initiative from the CDA - Electric Co-op
This is a CDA initiative. The agency is working in partnership with a range of other agencies including Leicester Energy Advice Centre (LEAC) and City Council to develop the project. Long term aims include developing a farmers’ co-operative producing biomass- crops which can be grown for conversion to energy by combustion. In the shorter term discussions are centering around a proposal to transfer LEAC’s mail order service for home energy saving measures into a co-operative company aiming at expansion into the supply and installation of these devices. This would be through an Intermediate Labour Market creating jobs and training for unemployed. The project also plans to investigate supplying these measures through credit unions via member loans. It is planned to use SRB 6 funding.
Rain Forest Natural Products
Two industrial chemists are in the process of setting up a co-operative to produce and retail toiletries using the natural ingredients they found on their travels in the Caribbean. They are based at the Moira Craft Workshops and plan to open in Leicester and other areas as well. The project has plenty of job creation possibilities, perhaps providing training and employment to people with learning disabilities.
Sonal Ayurvedic
Sonal now market their own brand of herbal medicines and are involved in a major community health programme aimed at reducing the incidence of diabetes and high blood pressure in the Asian community in Leicester.
A credit union for the whole of Leicester?
Leicester Credit Unions planning merger
Discussions took place this year on the possibility of the 3 credit unions in Leicester merging. Highfields credit union is arranging a feasibility study to develop this. If successful this would make credit union membership available to everyone living or working in the city.
EVENTS
A series of training days Making the Most of Advocacy are being arranged by Just Services a co-operative which is working for justice in health and social welfare. The co-op works with people who use health and social services, and with the provider organizations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. "We provide training, facilitation, consultancy and project evaluation, with the purpose of promoting empowerment. As directors we have a wide range of experience, and I myself am a disabled person with personal experience of using health and social services," said founder member Liz MacKenzie.
